Review

Coppens international is a fish feed producer since 1993. The company’s sole focus has always been on aquatic feeds. Coppens offers high-quality  feed programs for the following species: trout, marine fish, catfish, sturgeon, tilapia and carp and many more.

Consisting of broodstock diets, live feeds, hatchery feeds, nursery diets and a wide range of (pre-)growers, each program ensures optimum results throughout the lifecycle of your fish.

Next to that we are also recognised as an important player in the angling and ornamental fish sector.

Specific programs are composed for the ornamental fish breeders and fish keepers. These programs consist of premium quality fish feeds and special mixes for many types of ornamental fish, including koi, pond and aquarium fish. Our high-end angling program offers the discerning angler special extruded feed pellets, hookable baits and crushes.

In Coppens’ sustainability efforts the selection and sourcing of raw materials for the production of fish feed is an essential aspect. Fish meal and fish oil are therefore sourced from officially controlled fisheries.

Through the development of more efficient fish feeds Coppens is reducing the pressure on marine raw material resources. Step by step the use of marine raw materials is further reduced while keeping the performance of the feeds on a high level.

Coppens invests, a large amount of its research budget in developing fish feeds that are less dependent on marine resources like fish meal and fish oil. At the Coppens Research Centre (CRC) we run trials replacing fish oil and fish meal ensuring that palatability and performance of the feeds is not affected, while pollution is minimised, and keeping a keen eye that the solutions are cost effective.

The combination of quality-conscious, efficient staff and our widespread network of specialised agents and distributors makes sure that 60 countries throughout the world are supplied with our feeds.

Coppens is dedicated to your performance in a responsible and sustainable way!

Roughly one out of four farmed fish produced in Europe and Chile are fed with BioMar fish feed. Worldwide the BioMar Group supplies feed to around 60 countries and to more than 25 different fish species.

BioMar’s different feed ranges cover the full life cycle of both marine and fresh water fish species. Starting with the LARVIVA product range for larvae, fry, and shrimp the product range continues with a number of regionally specific types of fry feed, such as INICIO Plus (available from BioMar North Sea and Continental Europe) and ALITEC (available from BioMar Americas). The product programme includes a large variety of grower feeds and specially enriched brood stock feeds targeted at different fish species.

BioMar offers feed to a multitude of different farming conditions and feeding strategies, such as the ORBIT feed line, specifically targeted at aquaculture in recirculation systems, or feeds with active ingredients or different types of premixes of vitamins and minerals, which are key to keep fish healthy and provide optimal fish growth and thereby contribute to a healthy farm business

New feed concepts are constantly being developed in order to cater for new consumer trends and help aquaculture farmers grow their business.

The specific feed ranges available vary according to region and according to the primary fish species farmed in each region and special conditions such as climate and farm types.

New fish feed makes entry into market

Livestock Feeds plc (LSF), a subsidiary of UAC of Nigeria plc, has formally launched its Aquamax Fish Feed in Lagos. Aquamax Extruded Catfish Feed, which is presented in granules or pellets, provides nutrition in a stable and concentrated form, thereby enabling fish to feed efficiently and grow to their full potential.

According to the company, “with Aquamax, the maximisation of aqua resources is guaranteed. Testimonies from fish farmers that used this product during the test-marketing phase have attested to a Feed Conversion Ratio of 0.75kg feed to 1kg of flesh.”

Speaking at the launching ceremony which held at the Golden Tulip, Festac Lagos, Larry Ettah, group managing director of UAC, justified the introduction of Aquamax into the nation’s fish feed market, saying: “Our investment in fish feed is borne out of the strong and long-term fundamentals of the animal nutrition and fish feed markets. We are committed to a strategy of increasing profitability through innovative and sustainable nutritional solutions, while leveraging our position and capabilities to meet global standards in the industry. We are also confident that we have the right strategy and the right people to drive our vision.”

Ettah, who was represented at the occasion by Joe Dada, executive director, corporate services of UAC, said with Aquamax, fish farming would be revitalised in the country. As a people, our drive towards sustainable food security lies in transforming agriculture into a profitable and competitive endeavour that can attract our best hands. As a Company, we have, through Aquamax, demonstrated that fish farming and fish feeds have a new profitable and dependable partner. This is a partnership that we are committed to giving our best with Aquamax.”

Also speaking at the occasion, Modupe Asanmo, managing director of LSF, highlighted some of the exceptional qualities of Aquamax, saying: “We have produced an extruded fish feed that is fresh, affordable, with exciting aroma, attractive packaging and longer floating period to meet the nutritional requirements of catfish. To the catfish farmers, I boldly affirm that AQUAMAX is the dependable route to profitable return on investment.”

Asanmo, who described the launch of Aquamax as a good development, especially in the growing realisation of the health benefits of fish diets globally, said: “Fish, according to experts, is man’s most important single source of high quality protein. Statistics have shown that about one billion people worldwide rely on fish as their primary source of animal protein. As the demand for nutritional foods witnesses a steep rise, the consumption of fish is bound to grow even as per capita income improves due to growing human population.”

Recycled Whisky Waste Has £140m Potential

$

The Scotch whisky industry could generate UK£140 (US$211.534) million through recycling whisky wastes into fish feed for Scotland’s fish farming industry and help build a more circular economy.

The possibility was highlighted in the Circular Economy Scotland report, which examines how the certain sectors such as oil and gas and the food industry can use their strengths to generate millions of pounds worth of value from materials used in these areas.

It suggested the whisky industry could continue to capture heat and electricity from whisky wastes, but biorefining wastes could produce two more products in the forms of protein meal for fish farming and phytosterols, which help manage cholesterol levels.

The fishmeal created would be wroth approximately UK£1,500 (US$2,266.433) per tonne, significantly more than the UK£50 (US$75.548) per tonne for pot ale syrup.

“Scotland is a long way ahead of other parts of the UK in its policy support for resource productivity,” said Dustin Benton, of charity and independent think tank Green Alliance and author of the report.

“Its track record of success in renewables, combined with its research strengths and business support bodies, put it in a strong position to develop the technologies needed to capture high value, innovative manufacturing opportunities in a circular economy.”

In October last year, Royal Brackla Distillery became the fourth Scottish distillery to benefit from funding by the UK Green Investment Bank with a newly installed eco-friendly biomass boiler.

BioMar joins forces with Tongwei in China and South East Asia

$

The BioMar Group has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Tongwei Co. Ltd to establish a Joint Venture dedicated to producing and selling high performance feed for aquaculture in China. The target of the Joint Venture is to become one of the leading suppliers of high performance feed to the Chinese aquaculture sector and in a second step to expand further to other Asian markets.

The two companies have agreed to start building a feed factory with an annual capacity over 100,000 metric tons in China, scheduled to start operation in 2016. In the next stage BioMar and Tongwei target to expand with 3‐5 new factories of a similar or larger scale in China and to expand with production and sales in other countries in Asia.

BioMar’s entry into the Chinese market is according to the CEO of the BioMar Group, Carlos Diaz, a part of a global expansion strategy initiated a few years back with the establishment of a feed production unit in Costa Rica and which most recently has resulted in the construction of a new factory in Turkey.

Carlos Diaz explained that BioMar and Tongwei complement each other extremely well in terms of product ranges and market access: “China is the world largest aquaculture market and Tongwei holds the leading position as a feed supplier to the aquaculture industry in China.

BioMar will as a leading global supplier of specialized larval and fry diets as well as high performance grower diets and functional feeds contribute with know-how and product ranges for the fast growing production of high value fish species in China.” The product range for the new Joint Venture factory will include starter and grower feeds for marine and fresh water species such as sea bass, sea bream, cobia, turbot, bass, grouper, trout, sturgeon, tilapia, eel, and shrimp.

While BioMar will directly apply feed recipes and product ranges for some species, Carlos Diaz underlines that BioMar also brings a well proven approach in product development securing highly efficient, safe, and sustainable diets: “We have in the salmon segment as well as in other species built a model for feed development, which will be of great value in the development of feed for the new species which are gaining importance in aquaculture across Southeast Asia.”

Referring to recent reports pointing to the lack of clean water as one of the greatest challenges for the expansion of aquaculture production in China and the rest of Southeast Asia Carlos Diaz pointed to another key strength of BioMar: “In this scenario with water becoming an increasingly scarce resource BioMar can contribute with a huge amount of knowledge in environmental management, reduction of emissions from aquaculture to the aquatic environment, and especially with highly specialized diets developed for intensive fish production in recirculation aquaculture systems with very limited water consumption. BioMar has over the years through a proactive research effort and collaboration with farmers, authorities, and research institutions achieved a leading position in this field. This knowledge will be very important in the future development of aquaculture in China as well as the rest of Asia,” he said.

BioMar and Tongwei will each hold 50% of the new Joint Venture.

Tongwei Co. Ltd is a leading Chinese feed producer listed at the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and a part of the Tongwei Group. Tongwei operates nationwide in China as well as in Southeast Asia with over 100 branches and subsidiary companies. In 2014 Tongwei produced around 4,000,000 tons of feed of which 2,500,000 tons were aquaculture feeds. This makes Tongwei the world’s largest aquafeed manufacturer as well as a major livestock and poultry feed producer. It has held the leading position in the Chinese aquafeed industry for the last consecutive 22 years and it is continuing a rapid expansion within aquaculture research, aquaculture, animal health care, and food processing. The annual sales revenue of Tongwei is exceeding RMB 10 billion.

Founded in Denmark in 1962, the BioMar Group A/S is a leading supplier of feed to the aquaculture industry, ranking among the top three suppliers in the field of high performance feed worldwide. Currently BioMar has 11 production facilities, producing feed for more than 30 different species including among others salmon, trout, sea bass, sea bream, eel, tilapia, shrimp, and sturgeon. BioMar feeds are sold to more than 60 countries and a new factory is at present being built in Turkey. In 2014, the sales volume of BioMar was close to 1,000,000 tons with a turnover around 1.1 billion Euro. BioMar is fully owned by Danish Schouw & Co listed at the Nasdaq Copenhagen stock exchange.

Cermaq continues leadership in transparent sustainability reporting

The integrated report for 2014 was published today, demonstrating Cermaq’s continued engagement in transparency of the salmon farming industry. In addition to financial information, the report provides a wealth of performance indicators and describes how the company addresses sustainability issues.

One of the world’s largest farmers of salmon and trout published its integrated annual and sustainability report today at www.report2014.cermaq.com.

Cermaq’s operating result for 2014 was NOK 428 million, before fair value adjustment of biomass and adjusted for sales gains, based on operating revenue of NOK 5 616 million. The EBIT per kg fish sold in 2014 was NOK 3.8.

  • Cermaq Norway achieved its best operating result ever, while Cermaq Chile’s results were weakened by reduced prices in its main markets and a demanding biological situation. The Canadian operation performed well despite reduced market prices in its main market. Cermaq has throughout the year met its growth ambitions both with respect to new “green licenses” in Norway and additional new licences in the promising Region XII in Chile. Overall, the operating result was impacted Russian trade measures and declining market prices throughout the second half of the year, says Jon Hindar, CEO of Cermaq Group AS.

The integrated 2014 report includes detailed information about Cermaq’s performance also on  aspects such as occupational health and safety, biodiversity, fish health, antibiotic and sea lice treatment, fish feed, energy, and compliance with regulation. The sustainability section of the integrated report has been audited by EY, Cermaq’s financial auditor in all the operating regions.

Whereas encouraging progress was made in Chile with respect to the reduction of Caligus (sea-lice), the SRS disease continues to be a great concern.

  • Not only does SRS cause high mortality for Atlantic salmon and trout, but it also is by far the main cause of the increased use of antibiotics in Chile. Therefore the development of efficient vaccines against SRS remains a high priority going forward, underlines Jon Hindar.
  • Cermaq believes that open and relevant information will contribute to constructive relations to our stakeholders and to the positive development of the industry. Fish farming is expected to play an increasingly more important role in global food production going forward, and the industry must also demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development to earn trust and recognition, concludes Jon Hindar.

Sino Agro Food Provides Updates on the Restructuring of its Aquaculture Business

$
0
0

Sino Agro Food, Inc., an agriculture technology and natural food company that produces and sells protein food including seafood and cattle, on behalf of its wholly owned subsidiary Tri-way Industries Ltd. (“Tri-way”), announced it has completed important legal due diligence and made meaningful progress toward the restructuring, carve-out and subsequent spin-off of the Company’s aquaculture operations into an independent, publicly traded company.

The completion of this legal due diligence represents a significant milestone in the Company’s strategic plan, allowing it to move forward with the carve-out and spin-off of its aquaculture assets. The lead advisor for the planned IPO of the aquaculture business has accepted all legal opinions related to the below items.

1)     JFD registered as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise of Tri-way

The operating company of Aqua Farm 1, Jiangmen City A Power Fishery Development Co. Ltd. (“JFD”) has been registered as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (“WFOE”) of Tri-way by the Authorities of PRC Business Registration. Thus, shareholders of Sino Agro Food, Inc. are legally eligible to own shares in Tri-way directly, both prior to and at the time of IPO, under Hong Kong foreign ownership laws.

2)    Legal agreements pertaining to transfer of assets secured

JFD has secured the requisite legal agreements needed to acquire all farm assets of Aquafarm 2 (“AF2”)*, Aquafarm 3 (“AF3”)*, Aquafarm 4 (“AF4”)*, as well as the authority to determine and hire contractors for Aquafarm 5 (“AF5”)*. This is a positive step toward creating an efficient and streamlined single entity, which holds all the Company’s aquaculture operations, in preparation for the carve-out and spin-off of JFD’s parent company, Tri-way. Today, JFD also owns and operates Aquafarm 1, a grow-out facility for fish, prawns and eels in the Guangdong Province in China.

3)    Tri-way granted master license for APRAS technology

Furthermore, Sino Agro Food’s wholly owned subsidiary, Capital Award Inc., has granted Tri-way a China Master License to develop and operate up to 20,000 units of its A Power Recirculating Aquaculture System (“APRAS” technology) over a 50-year period, at a combined Developer and Operator’s license fee of $100,000 per APRAS. This will allow Tri-way to develop and operate additional aquaculture facilities using the APRAS technology, opening up long-term expansion opportunities in China. For a frame of reference, AF4 uses 144 APRAS modules and plans for AF5 call for 864 APRAS modules. The proprietary APRAS technology produces seafood using less water, less land, less feed, and is more bio-secure than other methods of aquaculture. Moreover, it produces a higher seafood yield and, due to its climate-controlled environment, ensures more reliable production all year round, compared with other farming methods (such as net-pen or pond culture).

Solomon Lee, the Chairman and CEO of Sino Agro Food Inc., stated, “The significant progress we have made restructuring our business and completing legal due diligence has helped with our preparation for the anticipated carve-out and subsequent spin-off of our aquaculture operations, which is designed to provide greater clarity to investors and to drive current and future value for the business and its stakeholders. Tri-way, as an independent entity, will be listed on the public markets where it is expected to trade at a market value commensurate with its peers, unleashing value for shareholders.”

Mr. Lee continued, “We continue to make solid progress toward our vision to build the world’s largest, indoor APRAS aquaculture farm, which will produce live shrimp, prawns, fish and eels. As we move forward with this strategic plan we are confident that our APRAS technology, high-margin seafood sales, and ability to scale means we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on increasing consumer demand from China’s burgeoning middle class.”

The aquaculture spin-off strategy

Spinning off Tri-way into an independent company is expected to provide the investor community with greater clarity into the financial and operational structure of the aquaculture business, and facilitate growth in the company. Sino Agro Food, Inc. believes creating a stand-alone company, afforded with a talented management team, top ranked auditor, as well as meeting the requirements set forth by the Stock Exchange, including corporate governance, will provide the necessary foundation for long-term value creation. In addition to providing dividend shares to current shareholders of Sino Agro Food, Inc., the Company, itself, will maintain a stake in Tri-way. As mentioned, Tri-way is underway with efforts toward listing on a senior exchange where it will trade as a pure aquaculture play, unlocking value for shareholders.

*The Company has recently changed the terminology it uses to refer to each farm because it is interchanging the species of seafood and prawns at its various farms. Referring to each as “aquaculture farms (“AF”)” is now more accurate. Fish Farm 1 becomes AF1 and Prawn Farms 1 through 4 become AF2 – 5. These labels will be forthcoming in the Company’s financial reports and collateral as the carve-out materialises.

Cargill and Skretting join forces to reduce environmental impact in Norway

Fish feed suppliers Cargill and Skretting will collaborate on transport of fish feed in Norway, under the name “Fjordfrende”. Instead of ships with Cargill’s EWOS feed sailing right behind ships with Skretting feed along the Norwegian coast, feed from both companies will be shipped by the same vessels. This will limit shipping traffic and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one fifth for the fish feed transport.

The two companies have selected shipping company Eidsvaag to be responsible for planning and handling of transport, including ships currently under contract.

Inefficient transport

‘With this cooperation we will increase the utilisation rate of our fleets and significantly reduce our environmental footprint,’ commented Fredrik Witte, Managing Director, Cargill Aqua Nutrition, North Sea.

The two companies believe that the collaboration will over time create efficiencies in transportation and increase service levels for Norwegian salmon farmers.

‘We are creating an efficient system by optimising capacity over time, giving aquaculture a better distribution model. Load capacity will be better utilised, there will be shorter sailing distances and investment opportunities will increase,’ commented Erlend Sødal, Managing Director of Skretting Norway.

‘We have named the collaboration ”Fjordfrende”, which in English means fjord friend, because it is about working together for fjord friendly transport,’ commented Fredrik Witte.

Greenhouse gas reduction equal to 7,500 cars

In the early years of the cooperation, it may already be possible to reduce the fleet capacity, while increasing the utilisation rate of the cargo capacity. This efficiency improvement will reduce emission of harmful greenhouse gases by one fifth per ton of fish feed transported. That equals 15-20 million kg of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing 7,500 cars from the roads every year.

In future, investments in new feed vessels will contribute to a better adapted and multifunctional feed fleet, while the emissions of greenhouse gases will be reduced. One fleet serving both parties will not only maintain today’s level of service, but also form a better basis for innovation and development.

Selskapene legger vekt på at de vil fortsatt være harde konkurrenter.

The companies stress that they will remain fierce competitors:

‘We will continue to compete on every aspect of our business, including product performance and prices. The difference will be that the feed will be delivered by the same ship operator,’ commented the directors.

The parties commissioned an independent third party, Tri-Vizor, as a trustee to ensure they continue to operate independently from each other.

Efficiency

In addition to the environmental benefits, the background for the collaboration is also to increase efficiency by avoiding parallel sailing.

‘We have to take action in order to run our business as efficiently as possible, and when we see environmental benefits on top of that, we know that this cooperation will pay off, ‘ commented Sødal.

EU Commission guidelines

The project is based on the guidelines and models developed for projects funded and supported by the EU Commission.

As Cargill and Skretting are competitors, antitrust compliance is crucial, and implies that certain information cannot be shared amongst both parties. Therefore, Tri-Vizor has established a framework that will be operated by Eidsvaag.

This framework will ensure efficient collaboration, guarantee that it is not possible for competitive-sensitive information to be shared between the companies, and avoid conflict with competition law. The process has also been closely monitored by specialised legal advisors.

Tri-Vizor is a Belgian company with expertise from comparable processes, and has participated in similar European projects helping several companies to set up horizontal transportation cooperations.

Continued cooperation

The companies will continue their cooperation with the existing transport companies, AquaShip/Artic Shipping, NTS/Rotsund and Eidsvaag.

‘They are all leaders within ocean transportation. Existing contracts will be maintained and we will continue our good relationships. The new element is that we will have one joint planning center where Eidsvaag will have the complete responsibility for planning and handling the transport. This will ensure the smartest transport that will benefit both the environment and the aquaculture industry,’ commented Witte.

Nutriad Adisseo was a proud sponsor of the third edition of Aquafarm, an international exhibition and conference for aquaculture and algaculture that took place during February 13-14 in Pordenone, Italy. The event gathered suppliers of fish feed, farming equipment, veterinary services and vaccines, and fish processing equipment with a strong focus on the Mediterranean aquaculture market. It provided a great opportunity for Nutriad Adisseo to further engage with customers and leadings experts present in this key market.

The conference was dedicated to provide updates on different aspects such as production technologies, environmental regulations, as well as health and nutrition of Mediterranean aquaculture species. Nutriad Adisseo hosted a presentation by Dr. Waldo Nuez, lead scientist Aquaculture at Nutriad, on the beneficial effects of organic selenium in the form of hydroxy-selenomethionine (Selisseo®) in fish species. Hydroxy-selenomethionine is a superior source of organic selenium for formulating aquafeed, according to Dr. Nuez. It results in a highly efficient deposition of seleniuim in tissues under the form of selenomethionine and enhances antioxidant status in relation to other selenium sources. Furthermore, its superior reliability, stability under aquafeed processing conditions, and safety to use, makes it the best choice to supplement selenium in aquafeeds. The event was enriched by a cooking show dedicated to “seafoodies”
.
Acquired by Adisseo in 2018, Nutriad offers species-specific feed additive specialties for aquaculture and helps producers of fish and shrimp across the world to prevent diseases and parasites; and to improve cost efficiency of feeds.
Adisseo is one of the world’s leading experts in feed additives. The group relies on its 11 research centers and its production sites based in Europe, USA and China to design, produce and market nutritional solutions for sustainable animal feed. With more than 2,100 employees, it serves around 3,500 customers in over 100 different countries through its global distribution network.
